The first soft drink can be traced back as far as the late 1700s when a young watchmaker, Jean Jacob Schweppe was the first to perfect a process for manufacturing the world's first carbonated mineral water. It was a keen interest in science that led him to experiment with the art of infusing water with carbon dioxide. Working from a Swiss lab in 1783, he patented his special process for carbonating water. This started the soft drink industry.
